We at Icelandic Mountain Guides are so lucky to get adventurers from all corners of the world to participate in our tours and experience Icelandic nature. This week we get a glimpse of the experience of Nancy Henning who came to Iceland with her friend, Dorsey Langan, to experience some adventures in Iceland.

What motivated you to visit Iceland?

My friend, Dorsey, and I had celebrated our birthdays in January and March and we wanted to go on an adventure.  We decided to do a trip where we could see ice caves and Northern Lights, and Iceland seemed to be the place to be to experience these things. On my last visit I had seen an advertising billboard at the airport that stated “A forty-year-old can do anything” and I thought it was quite fitting!

How long was your stay? Did you travel solo or with a group?

We stayed for 6 days and were in a group for part of it.

Which tour did you take and why did you choose it?

We did the Golden Circle and Glacier Getaway tour. A 3-day adventure tour on the South Coast of Iceland.

What is one thing you will always remember about your tour?

One thing? It’s a hard pick. My whole life I wanted to see the Northern Lights so to see them was  stunningly beautiful. That was really an experience. But also, the glacier, the new-fallen snow on the dramatic landscape of Þingvellir National Park contrasting the colors of the sunrise. It is hard to choose just one thing.

What is something that you learned about Iceland that surprised you?

Most surprising thing? Well, I found out that you can’t marry your first cousin in Iceland. You also have an app called Íslendingabók that shows how everybody is related in Iceland.

If you had more time in Iceland, what else would you like to see and do?

We would love to come back and do the Skógarfoss hike to Þórsmörk. Also, the Laugarvegur trail is very appealing to us.  And snorkelling the Silfra fissure!

What tips do you have for people who want to visit Iceland?

I highly recommend it. Come ready for an adventure. The weather is for sure unpredictable but keep an open mind and you will have an incredible experience. You never know what adventure is around the next corner. Iceland is also a great destination for families with kids.

My friend and I are thinking of Cuba.

Till next time!
