Explore An Icy Wonderland & Iceberg Filled Lagoon

Get the best bang for your buck by combining a stunning kayaking tour on the Sólheimajökull glacier lagoon with an epic glacier hike. After meeting your expert guide at the Sólheimajökull Base next to the Sólheimajökull parking lot, you will get geared up with a drysuit and paddle for your kayaking adventure.

Following a short tutorial, you will set off on your sit-on-top kayak and paddle on the calm, iceberg-filled lagoon. During the hour-long tour, you will witness stunning icebergs and a view of the glacier inaccessible to people on land. After kayaking, you will return to our base camp for a half-hour break before you begin the next activity.

To prepare for your glacier walk, you will get an ice axe, crampons, harness and a short safety briefing from your guide. You will be led through an otherworldly icy landscape of stark contrasts on the glacier. The blue and white ice mixed with the dark volcanic ash from past eruptions is stunning. You will explore some of the many crevasses and ice sculptures of the glacier and learn about the area's geology and history.

Both tours suit all skill levels and are led by professional glacier and kayaking guides. You will receive all the necessary safety equipment for each activity.

Practical Information

What is the difference between Sólheimajökull and Skaftafell?

Sólheimajökull is in the south and is closer to Reykjavik, Skaftafell is in the south east and much farther away. The tours we offer on both locations are very similar, only operated on different glaciers so you can choose the one that best fits your travel schedule.

Why do I need to arrive 20 minutes before departure time?

Before we head to the glacier for the tour we need to get everyone fitted with the equipment, crampons and harnesses. The crampons need to be adjusted to each persons shoe size so it is important that people arrive 20 minutes before so everyone is ready at the departure time.

How long in advance do I need to book?

We always recommend to book as soon as you are ready especially if you have a strict travel schedule or a large group. It is easy to change or cancel 24 hours before departure by emailing us (info@mountainguides.is). Tours can also be purchased the day of as long as there are spaces available.

What is the address of the meeting place?

Our meeting points do not have official addresses, but you can see directions and GPS points if you click the map above, or find the location on Google Maps here.
