Snowmobile and Glacier Hike South Coast Combo

This epic tour combines two exciting glacier adventures on the South Coast in one tour. You get the opportunity to ride to the top of the Mýrdalsjökull (the ice cap atop Katla volcano) on a snowmobile and then explore the crevasses and glacier formations of its picturesque outlet glacier Sólheimajökull.

You will meet us at Mýrdalsjökull Base Camp, where we will take you up to the ice cap in a real glacier truck (30 min each way). Once there, we will ride across the ice field on snowmobiles and enjoy the glacier wilderness and the amazing South Coast scenery.

After the snowmobile tour, you must travel on your own to our Sólheimajökull Base by Sólheimajökull glacier. You will get detailed driving instructions on your voucher if you book the tour. There, you will meet your certified and expert glacier guide, who will lead you on a 2.5-hour-long adventure through the fascinating features of Sólheimajökull glacier.

You will get a safety briefing and a tutorial on using your glacier equipment. Then you will go on a short and safe glacier walk around the deep crevasses, ice formations and tunnels on Sólheimajökull. No prior experience is needed for a fantastic glacier adventure.

Please note: All drivers must be 17 years of age or older and have a full, valid driver's license. According to Icelandic law, a learner´s permit, tractor, or motorcycle license is not sufficient. Single riders and groups with odd numbers must book a single-ride snowmobile. This tour is met on location only.

Practical Information

What is the difference between Sólheimajökull and Skaftafell?

Sólheimajökull is in the south and is closer to Reykjavik, Skaftafell is in the south east and much farther away. The tours we offer on both locations are very similar, only operated on different glaciers so you can choose the one that best fits your travel schedule.

Why do I need to arrive 20 minutes before departure time?

Before we head to the glacier for the tour we need to get everyone fitted with the equipment, crampons and harnesses. The crampons need to be adjusted to each persons shoe size so it is important that people arrive 20 minutes before so everyone is ready at the departure time.

How long in advance do I need to book?

We always recommend to book as soon as you are ready especially if you have a strict travel schedule or a large group. It is easy to change or cancel 24 hours before departure by emailing us (info@mountainguides.is). Tours can also be purchased the day of as long as there are spaces available.

What is the address of the meeting place?

Our meeting points do not have official addresses, but you can see directions and GPS points if you click the map above, or find the location on Google Maps here.
