Explore Parts of Sólheimajökull Glacier Seen Only By A Few

Get ready for an adventure where you spend a full day exploring areas of Sólheimajökull glacier that few people will experience. You will spend the whole day on Iceland's most famous outlet glacier in a small-group, maximum of eight people. The tour kicks off in the morning when you meet your expert guide in the Sólheimajökull parking area. Please be ready 20 minutes before departure and note that it takes two and half hours to drive to Sólheimajökull glacier from Reykjavík.

After being fitted with glacier gear - crampons, helmets and harnesses - you will set off on a ten to fifteen minute walk to the glacier’s edge. Right before stepping on the glacier, your guide will provide a safety briefing and instructions on how to use your glacier equipment.

During your initial walk on the glacier, your guide will lead you through a labyrinth of ash covered ice - remnants from a previous volcano eruption - until you reach the more familiar blue and white ice that so many people associate with glaciers. As you step farther into the landscape and away from the groups on shorter Glacier Walks, you will encounter moulins, deep crevasses, water cauldrons, ice sculptures, and the silence accompanied with being in an area with very few people. Your passionate and experienced glacier guide will share their extensive knowledge about the fantastic ice formations present on this impressive terrain. The fascinating geological information that your guide provides will give you some insight about Iceland’s unique landscape and the impact of climate change on this fragile environment. During your exploration of this extensive ice field, you might encounter moulins, deep cravasses that you have to cross with a rope, water cauldrons and ice sculptures. Higher up on the glacier, you will have stunning views of the surrounding landscapes. When you stop for lunch, which we recommend that you bring along, there is the opportunity to fill up your reusable bottle with fresh and delicious glacier water. You will spend about six hours on the glacier before heading back to the parking lot. After this full day Glacier Hike, you can proudly say that you have fully experienced this glacier.
