Experience the Volcanic Power of the Reykjanes Peninsula

Once a thriving fishing village, Grindavík now stands as a powerful reminder of nature’s power. Following a recent volcanic eruption, much of the town remains uninhabitable, forever scarred by the forces of the earth.

This tour takes you deep into the Reykjanes Peninsula to witness the aftermath of these eruptions. After a pickup in Reykjavík, we’ll journey through volcanic landscapes, stopping first at Seltún, where bubbling mud pools and steaming vents showcase Iceland’s geothermal energy.

Next, we head to Fagradalsfjall Volcano. The highlight of the tour is a 45-minute hike over still-warm lava fields to a viewpoint overlooking fresh lava flows. The total hike is about 5.5 km (3.4 miles) with moderate elevation, making it suitable for most.

After the hike, we visit the village of Grindavík, where you’ll learn how residents quickly built barriers to protect the town from lava flows. You'll also see how tectonic rifts have reshaped the area.

We end the day with a traditional fish and chips meal, featuring locally-caught seafood, before returning to Reykjavík with unforgettable memories of Grindavík and its volcanic surroundings.
